So, you’re hosting an event during a conference or trade show, perhaps a meetup, a happy hour, or maybe even some speakers with engaging content hosted by a dynamic moderator (you are at least getting dynamic speakers, yes? God forbid you’re putting people on stage because they’re the VP or some such); I’m excited, send me the invite! But let me first beg you, plead with you, and actually use very harsh language, to help you focus on the fact that no one, literally no one, is looking forward to attending a conference to go to an event at some hum drum venue the likes of which can be found in Everytown, U.S.A. (unless that is, it’s Chili’s on 45th and Lamar in Austin, trust me, incredible spot).
Speaking of Austin, SXSW is coming up and that means 723 events at the same time, every night, starting tonight, and running through mid-March when the hotels start kicking everyone out.
This inspired me… no, that’s not true, Kenny Madden inspired me to help you do better, with Paul O’Brien’s top 10 things to do in Austin beyond the corporate swag
I’m not kidding, for an event like SXSW, or CES in Las Vegas, or the Chicago Auto Show, there are more places you need to be than is conceivable (This year for SXSW, Austin’s Marisa Vickers has a helpful guide). Do a quick Google Search (or these days, ask Grok), and you’ll find countless articles about how to make the most of attending such events (good shoes, Tylenol, put your FOMO aside and live in the moment, be fluid, don’t talk to anyone too long, make a good impression), so I felt that Madden was right, what we could be doing is instead helping event producers, managers, and sponsors, find better alternatives than everyone meeting at the bank for cocktails.
People are coming to Austin for crying out loud, show them Austin! The generic ballroom, event space, chain restaurant, or hotel rooftop, is not likely it, and no, adding “Austin-inspired” cocktails doesn’t make it cute, we don’t even drink those here. Austin isn’t just a city—it’s a culture, a vibe, an energy. Your event needs to immerse people in that, not just be located here, just because SXSW.
And let me be clear why I’m writing this, SINCE there are 723 events in Austin every night through March 25th, you need to stop asking yourself how to host a good event and instead ask WHERE people would want to be. While attendees are fretting about missing out on something or worried that Sabrina Carpenter will happen to appear at The Comedy Mothership, you want to put together your experience doing the local things that people want to do. The impact of your event isn’t meeting people and getting your brand on a slideshow while the Head of Sales is happy because they get to say a few words to a less-than-well-attended-event-than-hoped, it’s to host something where everyone will remember and keep talking about you!
Here’s where you do it. A mix of BBQ, beer, music, history, and just enough weirdness to make attendees wonder why they don’t live here already.
The Kenny Madden Inspired Paul O’Brien List of Places to Host a Meetup That’s Better than the W Hotel
(no offense W, if you have something cool going on, let me know, I love hanging out there!)
1. The Salt Lick BBQ (Driftwood)
BBQ is religion in Texas, and The Salt Lick is the temple (actually, Interstellar just got the Michelin star but the line to get in there is already 2 hours long at 10 am in the morning). So, Salt Lick! You don’t just eat here — you commit. An open-pit smoking meat as if time doesn’t exist, communal picnic tables under ancient oak trees, and a BYOB policy that means your event feels more like a backyard bash than a conference function. It’s a short drive out of town, but that drive through the Hill Country? That’s the point.
2. The Driskill Hotel – The Bar or The Maximilian Room
You want old-school Texas swagger? This is where cattle barons and oil tycoons used to make deals over whiskey, perhaps involving a gun fight or two, and it still feels that way. The Maximilian Room, decked out with Austrian mirrors, is where you host something classy. The Driskill Bar, with its dark leather, taxidermy, and live music, is where you go when you want people to leave saying, “Yeah, I felt Austin.”
3. Easy Tiger (Linc or 6th Street)
Austin has beer gardens. Austin has bakeries. And then Austin has Easy Tiger, which said, “Why not both?” A perfect spot for casual networking, this place has long communal tables, pretzels bigger than your head, and a curated beer list that actually makes you want to drink beer again.
4. Laguna Gloria at The Contemporary Austin
This is where you go when you want attendees to feel cultured without dragging them through a stuffy art gallery. A lakeside Italian villa with contemporary outdoor sculptures makes for a fantastic backdrop—whether for a networking event, a fireside chat, or just a reason to step away from downtown madness.
5. Antone’s Nightclub
If you don’t do something with live music in Austin, just unfriend me right now. Antone’s is the legendary blues club where Stevie Ray Vaughan made his name, and while it’s a full-on music venue, it’s also perfect for an evening event where people actually experience the city instead of just talking about it.
6. Geraldine’s at Hotel Van Zandt
Rooftop. Lake views. Live music. Craft cocktails. This is for the conference organizer who wants to give people the illusion of keeping it professional while we all know you’re actually hoping everyone forgets they’re at a work event and you just need to it to look good, so your boss approves.
7. The Long Center’s H-E-B Terrace
A rooftop event with the best skyline view of Austin that isn’t a cliché hotel bar? That’s The Long Center terrace. Plenty of space, the perfect setting for fireside chats or mingling, and no one has to pretend they’re impressed by another generic downtown venue.
8. Meanwhile Brewing
Meanwhile has everything: huge outdoor space, beer brewed on-site, food trucks, and the kind of laid-back Austin vibe that makes people loosen their ties (which is an inside joke because if you wear a tie, leave it at home, unless it’s a bolo). A+ for relaxed networking where the conversations don’t feel forced.
9. The Little Longhorn Saloon (for Chicken Sh*t Bingo Sundays)
Nothing says “this is a real Austin experience” like a chicken deciding your fate on a bingo board. For many, this is how startup investment decisions are made. It’s weird, it’s rowdy, it’s unforgettable. Ideal for an event that embraces the unexpected and gives attendees something to talk about long after the conference is over.
10. Waterloo Greenway – Moody Amphitheater
Want a space that feels urban but not suffocating? The Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Greenway delivers. It’s a modern outdoor venue that somehow still manages to capture Austin’s relaxed energy, and it works just as well for an organized talk as it does for a chill after-hours meetup.
11. Treaty Oak Distilling (Dripping Springs)
Because craft beer is great, but you know what’s better? Texas whiskey. Treaty Oak gives you a massive ranch setting with live music, BBQ, and some of the best whiskey you’ll ever taste. Business gets done faster when bourbon is involved.
12. Deep Eddy Cabaret
Yes, a Cabaret, and you know what that means *wink wink* No, wait, sorry, that’s Yellow Rose (not Kendra Scott’s new store). This is where you take your team when you want them to feel like locals, not tourists. Deep Eddy is the perfect dive bar in the best sense of the word—cheap beer, no frills, and a history that stretches back to when Austin was still figuring out what it wanted to be, which is still now, frankly.
13. Barton Springs Pool (Zilker Park)
If your conference has a wellness or mindfulness angle, hosting something at Barton Springs is the way to go. Early morning dips in the spring-fed water (68 degrees year-round), yoga by the pool, or just a laid-back networking event on the lawn—it’s Austin at its most effortlessly cool.
14. The White Horse
For when your networking event needs a honky-tonk twist. Live country music, two-stepping, and a crowd that includes everyone from startup founders to actual cowboys. No one leaves here without a story.
15. Stubb’s BBQ (Gospel Brunch)
Barbecue and a gospel choir? Praise Jesus. Stubb’s Gospel Brunch is part music, part church, part indulgence, and all Austin. A power breakfast event here is a flex — attendees get amazing food and an experience that makes miracles more likely.
16. Mohawk Austin
Want something grittier? Mohawk is a dive-y live music venue that screams authenticity. It’s where indie bands and business types alike congregate, making it perfect for an unpolished, high-energy networking event.
17. Circuit of The Americas – COTA Karting
Nothing says “icebreaker” like throwing a bunch of executives into high-speed go-karts on an F1 track. It’s competitive, it’s thrilling, and it’s an experience people can actually bond over.
18. Franklin Barbecue (Private Event Space)
Before Interstellar it was Franklin’s where the line to get meat is longer than the one for singles night at Superstition. Absurd. (Whoa, did the close!? I really should do some homework before writing these articles). I digress, did you know you can skip the Franklin line by booking their private space? Now you do. Host an event here, serve the best brisket in the world, and cement your reputation as the smartest conference organizer alive.
19. The Oasis on Lake Travis
Yes, it’s touristy. Yes, it might seem far. But those sunsets over Lake Travis are no joke. If your event is about making an impression (or just giving people an excuse to drink margaritas on a balcony), this is your spot.
20. Willie Nelson’s Luck Ranch (if you can pull it off)
The holy grail. Luck, Texas is Willie Nelson’s private ranch-turned-music-venue, and if you can manage to host an event here, you’ve won Austin. It’s exclusive, it’s legendary, and it’s pure Texas. Good luck getting in, but if you do, people will never forget it.
HONORABLE MENTION Cosmic Coffee + Beer Garden (South & Cosmic Saltillo)
If Austin’s essence could be bottled up into a single venue, it would probably look something like Cosmic Coffee & Beer Garden. This place isn’t just a coffee shop, and it’s certainly not just a bar. It’s a fully immersive Austin experience—part sustainable urban oasis, part live music venue, part casual networking hub, and entirely the kind of place you wish every city had but only Austin actually does.
Cosmic Coffee & Beer Garden (Original – South Austin)
Tucked away in a spot that feels hidden but is somehow always packed with locals, the original Cosmic Coffee & Beer Garden in South Austin is an absolute gem for hosting casual meetups. The space is massive—outdoor patios with twinkling lights, a pond with turtles and koi fish, fire pits, and lush gardens that scream “I moved to Austin to get away from corporate hell.” But don’t let the relaxed vibes fool you—this is a networking powerhouse. Founders, creatives, musicians, tech workers, and old-school Austinites all flock here, making it a natural setting for an SXSW event that doesn’t feel like a manufactured “networking experience.”
The coffee? Phenomenal. The beer selection? Local and curated. And let’s talk about the food trucks — some of the best in Austin rotate through here, ensuring your attendees don’t just leave with business cards, but also with a taco or smoked brisket sandwich they’ll dream about for years.
Cosmic Saltillo (Downtown – East Austin)
Now, for those who want a more downtown-friendly version of this experience, Cosmic Saltillo brings the same laid-back energy but with a more urban setting. Right in the middle of East Austin, next to the Saltillo Plaza and rail station, it’s perfect for those who want a walkable location near SXSW chaos while still maintaining some distance from the madness of 6th Street.
Cosmic Saltillo takes everything that worked at the South location and elevates it—bigger bar, more food trucks, even more impressive architecture. And unlike the original, it actually has some indoor space for those times when Austin’s weather decides to be less than cooperative.
Both locations are ideal for events that want to feel effortlessly cool. Whether you’re hosting a happy hour, a speaker meetup, or just an off-the-books gathering for the people who actually make things happen at SXSW, Cosmic makes it feel natural. No name tags, no awkward icebreakers, just great drinks, great food, and the kind of crowd that reminds you why you came to Austin in the first place.
Most conference events are a forgettable blur of bad cocktails, awkward small talk, and the creeping realization that you could’ve just stayed at the hotel bar and had the same experience. But this is Austin—a city built on live music, BBQ smoke, and the kind of weird that makes it plausible you’ll see a naked man riding a bike down Congress Ave; unpolished charm that makes people never want to leave. If your event doesn’t feel like Austin, why bother having it here? Host it somewhere people will actually remember. And if you’re still thinking about booking a generic hotel ballroom, do everyone a favor and just send an email instead, we have our spam filters on for a reason.

I’ve moved so a bit out of the loop but is Spiderhouse still kicking it? The outdoor area is a great spot for getting out of downtown and then you’re a short walk from Hole in the Wall and Guad
All great options!
Tyler Coleman It reopened as Tweedy’s two years ago, though the Spider House branding still gets applied sometimes to the Ballroom next door. https://www.austinchronicle.com/music/2022-11-18/former-spider-house-cafe-has-reopened-as-tweedys/
